(Used in this project: Canning Labels in Classic Oldstyle style.) Mike and I have been friends for a LONG time. We grew up in San Diego together, we moved to the Pacific Northwest together, we've played in bands together, we've done it all together. So when it's time for Mike's birthday, I make sure I get him something one-of-a-kind. This year he wanted to go home, back to San Diego, for a little change of weather. It can get pretty dreary here in Portland and there is no better vacation spot … [Read more...]
Ever since I was a kid, I've been a little bit of a trickster. I loved being a little devil. All mostly harmless of course, but there was nothing more fun than watching someone turn rosy out of embarrassment from a well placed whoopee cushion. I used to love going into magic shops and novelty stores to buy all the gags I could. Fake mustaches, color changing gum, soap that makes you smell bad, a dollar bill on fishing line - I loved all the classics. And now that I've grown up, not much has … [Read more...]
Plus a creative cocktail recipe!
The following is the earliest definition of a cocktail comes from 1806, where an answer was provided to the question, "What is a cocktail?" "Cocktail is a stimulating liquor composed of spirits of any kind, sugar, water, and bitters•" (source) To me, however, a well made cocktail is more than just a tasty libation, it transports me to a time when society had grace and style and took pride in innovating more delicious ways to enjoy spirits. And though just the sheer number of … [Read more...]

But on days I have free I set my alarm and rustle out of bed at the crack of dawn so I can indulge in my all-time favorite meal of any day, brunch! There are some things I just can't get out of my head. A classic melody, a hilarious moment, and recently a local restaurant's flavored popcorn. I know what you are thinking, "Popcorn is popcorn. Salt, butter, what's there to it?", but at this place they have delicious weekly flavors like olive oil and lemon zest, or Italian herbs and parmesan. Lately, my lovely lady friend and I have been eating out less to save money, so we decided to make our own flavored popcorn at home! Because in the end, … [Read more...]
It's here! It's here! Summer is finally here! Us pacific northwesterners don't get very long summers, but when they come we take full advantage of them and that means grilling. It was pretty simple and it made the hot dogs and hamburgers we had even more of an occasion! Here are the recipes for both…the ketchup takes a little longer to make, but boy oh boy is it worth … [Read more...]

A Homemade Concoction
If you've read any of my posts on My Own Ideas, it's no surprise I consider myself a bit of a mixologist. I love being able to have people over and make them any cocktail to fit their mood and taste. I feel like a mad scientist creating delicious concoctions! Bitters was first created in the 1800's and used as a medicinal tonic sold by, often, less than reputable doctors. After their medical properties were debunked, they became a favorite digestif and flavoring in cocktails, and today they … [Read more...]
Well faith and begorrah it's almost St. Patrick's day! That means one thing for me and my buddies - Guiness. And who knew there were so many ways to enjoy this great Irish tradition. I came across this recipe here and it looked so delicious I had to try it. Let me tell you, they say soda bread is Irish, but nothing is more Irish and more delicious to me than Guiness beer bread.
