I am not a morning person. I don’t like getting out of bed, ever. But on days I have free I set my alarm and rustle out of bed at the crack of dawn so I can indulge in my all-time favorite meal of any day, brunch! Last month, some friends and I decided to have a brunch party. Everyone brought a favorite brunch dish to share. I decided to make Bloody Mary’s because no brunch is complete without them! And though they are known has the world’s most complex cocktail, they really are very very simple to make. And the best thing about this “meal in a glass” is that there must be hundreds of ways to prepare them, one for every taste of your guests.
The following recipe is for a classic Bloody Mary, but get creative with it! Instead of tobasco and horseradish use sriracha and wasabi for an asian flavor, or omit the spicy parts all together for more conservative taste buds.
Classic Bloody Mary Recipe
Makes one cocktail
• 1 to 1 1/2 oz vodka
• 6 to 8 oz of tomato juice (depending on the size of your glass)
• 1 dash of salt
• 1 dash of pepper
• 1 dash of tobasco sauce
• 2-4 dashes of worcestershire sauce
• 1/8 tsp horseradish (pure, never creamed)
• 1-2 dashes of Lemon juice
Combine all ingredients in a highball glass filled with ice. Stir until combined. Garnish with a celery stalk, olives, lime, etc.
Pretty simple right? When you’re throwing a brunch party, make all your mix ahead of time. Multiply the cocktail recipe by how many drinks you are serving and all you have to do is add vodka and pour over ice. For instance, with a group of 6, the recipe, minus the vodka, would be as follows:
• 1 1/2 qt tomato juice
• 1 tsp of salt
• 1 tsp of pepper
• 1-2 tsp of tobacco sauce
• 1-2 tbs of worcestershire sauce
• 2/3 tsp horseradish
• 1 tbs of lemon juice
That way you can play bartender and still enjoy the party. The mix is so simple to make, I even made up some extra bottles complete with custom labels and gift tags for friends to take home with them.
