Homemade Tea Favors

Homemade tea blends are easy to make and package perfectly as favors for wedding or shower guests. The hardest part is deciding what kind of tea you want to make. Once it is all made up, you will find you have lots and lots of it, because a little bit of dried leaves go a long, long way. Make loose-leaf tea by picking your own homegrown leaves or buying tea in bulk, and blend the leaves as you like, adding herbs and spices. My first tea was mint tea, because I love it and because I have a large … [read more...]

Memorial Candles

Our community experienced a sad event recently; a young adult friend of ours, Matthew, unexpectedly died. To remember him, his family and friends decided to gather at their neighborhood park where they had always played as children, and hold a candlelight vigil on what was to be his 24th birthday. I really wanted to do something special to help his mom, sisters, and brothers who where stricken with grief and struggling with all the arrangements that had to be made. I picked up two dozen of these … [read more...]

Homemade Horchata

My husband and I are hosting a Cinco De Mayo fiesta at our house this year, so we thought it’d be fun to whip up our favorite Mexican beverage for the occasion – Horchata! One thing I love about this drink is that it can be made in so many different ways. For example, you can experiment with different types of rice, or you can add a handful of your favorite nuts to change the flavor profile. I even like to add a little rum or brandy for the adults at the party! Homemade Horchata • ¾ cup … [read more...]

Pickled Carrots

Mike and I have been friends for a LONG time. We grew up in San Diego together, we moved to the Pacific Northwest together, we've played in bands together, we've done it all together. So when it's time for Mike's birthday, I make sure I get him something one-of-a-kind. This year he wanted to go home, back to San Diego, for a little change of weather. It can get pretty dreary here in Portland and there is no better vacation spot for weather than San Diego. And there's no better Mexican food either. … [read more...]

Apple Jellies

There are a lot of great chocolate, caramel, and peanut buttery treats out there. Any assortment of those is always fine by me, however, when I come across my favorite fruit gummy snack- its as if nothing else exists! There is a picnic coming up, so I thought I would bring something a bit different- a fruity candy for a lighter treat. In hopes of making the candies a bit healthier, even if slightly, I set my sights on a wealth of online recipes. Whenever I look for new candy recipes, it seems to … [read more...]
