Baked Veggie Chips

Super Bowl Sunday is a serious event. Not being a sports buff myself; growing up in Oregon, I could opt out of the raucous with ease. Sports fans in Florida are far more intense. There is no escape, so this year- I’m embracing! My roommates, Beth and Luc, are hosting a Super Bowl party at our house for 2012. It’s going to be epic carnage of yelling, cursing, sports jargon, and grub consumption. In order to entertain and satisfy the ladies attending with the brood, I prepared Baked Veggie Chips … [read more...]

Simple Gifts: Stuffed Olives

Super simple. The hardest part of this is gathering the components - the jars, the olives, the cheeses, the herbs, the labels - but once they are all at hand, making a dozen jars of stuffed olives will take an hour or two, and when done, you are all prepared with hostess gifts for the season! Ingredients and Materials: Olives - choose large pitted olives; buy enough to fill the number of jars you have. Herbs - your choice. Experiment with different combinations of the following, or just … [read more...]

Homemade Hummus

The idea to make gifts of homemade hummus came to me after serving a bowl of it, complete with a giant platter of raw garden vegetables, at a recent end-of-summer potluck. To my complete surprise, the hummus was gone by the end of the night, and several of the guests approached me to ask where I bought it, saying they'd never tasted anything like it before. Of course, when I told them it was homemade, they demanded a copy of the recipe. So, because my homemade hummus was such a hit that night, I … [read more...]

Candy Corn Party Mix

I am very excited about planning a kids Halloween party this year with my friends. We have lots of fun games and treats planned. I'm bringing my candy corn party mix. This is not your ordinary Chex mix either, it's full of little candy corn candies, and coated in white chocolate. I just know they will get eaten up quickly. And it makes me feel better knowing that the little ones will be getting a serving of whole grains and not even know it! Ingredients: • 4 cups Chex Mix cereal • 2 cups … [read more...]

Simple Gifts: Dried Fruits & Nuts

A beautifully simple, yet lavishly appealing, box of goodies. When I finished the photo shoot at the office, I put the boxes on the tables in the staff room. Oh, the oohs and ahhs! It was just a collection of dried fruits and nuts, but there is somehow an appeal that speaks clearly. As people admired the boxed goodies and reached for a dried apricot or macadamia nut, I heard “...and they are so healthy, too!” “...ooh, these are so good for you!” There is nothing to it, really. Just put … [read more...]

Homemade Fruit Leather

Recently, I made an impulse purchase on a flat of strawberries at the farmer's market. The only problem? After I brought the berries home, I realized that I wasn't in the mood for making jam or pie. Lucky for me, I remembered running across a recipe for homemade fruit leather over on Simply Recipes just the other day, so I seized the opportunity to try it myself. The procedure is very simple, and written in such a way that you can utilize any fruit that's available to you. In fact, I plan on making … [read more...]

Flavored Popcorn

There are some things I just can't get out of my head. A classic melody, a hilarious moment, and recently a local restaurant's flavored popcorn. I know what you are thinking, "Popcorn is popcorn. Salt, butter, what's there to it?", but at this place they have delicious weekly flavors like olive oil and lemon zest, or Italian herbs and parmesan. Lately, my lovely lady friend and I have been eating out less to save money, so we decided to make our own flavored popcorn at home! Because in the end, you're … [read more...]

Simple Gifts: Stuffed Dates

These little treats go back many, many years to when I was a very small girl in Redwood City, California. In preparation for our family gatherings, my mom would make these stuffed dates and one year at last I was old enough to help. Mom cracked the nuts and sliced and pitted the dates, then I would put the nuts into the dates. Together, we would roll them in powdered sugar and arrange the powdery white morsels prettily on a plate to serve as one of the desserts. When I grew up, I never forgot those … [read more...]

Sally’s Salsa

Every year I love to have a garden and experiment with growing different things. Last year I grew just a “salsa garden” with garlic, peppers, onions and of course tomatoes!  I ended up canning my own homemade salsa to give away as gifts. It felt so nice to be able to say I grew almost everything in my salsa myself (I did add cilantro, lemon pepper and vinegar from the store). I also made my own label for my canned salsa jars. My salsa garden conveniently was located at our My Own Labels office … [read more...]
