Flavored Popcorn

There are some things I just can't get out of my head. A classic melody, a hilarious moment, and recently a local restaurant's flavored popcorn. I know what you are thinking, "Popcorn is popcorn. Salt, butter, what's there to it?", but at this place they have delicious weekly flavors like olive oil and lemon zest, or Italian herbs and parmesan. Lately, my lovely lady friend and I have been eating out less to save money, so we decided to make our own flavored popcorn at home! Because in the end, you're … [read more...]

Simple Gifts: Stuffed Dates

These little treats go back many, many years to when I was a very small girl in Redwood City, California. In preparation for our family gatherings, my mom would make these stuffed dates and one year at last I was old enough to help. Mom cracked the nuts and sliced and pitted the dates, then I would put the nuts into the dates. Together, we would roll them in powdered sugar and arrange the powdery white morsels prettily on a plate to serve as one of the desserts. When I grew up, I never forgot those … [read more...]

Sally’s Salsa

Every year I love to have a garden and experiment with growing different things. Last year I grew just a “salsa garden” with garlic, peppers, onions and of course tomatoes!  I ended up canning my own homemade salsa to give away as gifts. It felt so nice to be able to say I grew almost everything in my salsa myself (I did add cilantro, lemon pepper and vinegar from the store). I also made my own label for my canned salsa jars. My salsa garden conveniently was located at our My Own Labels office … [read more...]

Homemade Granola

I eat oatmeal almost every morning for breakfast, especially when it's cold outside. In the warmer months, however, I'll switch to a nice, light bowl of granola with yogurt, topped with a little fresh fruit. It's equally nutritious, fulfilling, and super good. If you like store bought granola, you'll really like the homemade version. It's easy to make, and generally calls for natural sweeteners instead of the processed stuff. It's also flexible because you can swap in whichever dried fruits and … [read more...]

Gluten-Free Oven Fried Hot Wings

The other day Ritch, our lead web programmer at My Own Labels, told me that he cooks only one thing - hot wings! And if it were up to him, he'd eat them every Sunday during the football season, but sometimes his wife requests that they take a break and try something else. He told me that he has just about perfected his own recipe and wondered if I’d like to share it on My Own Ideas. Of course, I said yes! Then he showed me some custom hot wing coasters he ordered special for Super Bowl Sunday. … [read more...]

Simple Gifts: Roasted Nuts

It was a conversation with my 88-year-old mother, Barbara White, that generated the idea for a Simple Gifts series. Mom has always loved baking up a storm right before Christmas, making dozens of different kinds of cookies, then arranging them on plates to give to friends and family. But this year, she said with great regret, she is "too tired" to bake cookies for everyone. "I will just buy a box of chocolates for the people on my list". I said, "Oh, Mom! You sound so sad! I know you want to give … [read more...]

Instant Oatmeal Mix

Every Christmas, our house is open to everyone who wants to come; family, friends, and neighbors are all invited. One of my favorite things to do for my guests is give everyone a little something to take home and enjoy over the first few months of the new year. Nothing big, just a little treat. Some years, we give out jam or jelly, other years it’s liqueur, toasted nuts, or home grown garlic wrapped and tied for display. This year we discovered the sweet little treat of instant oatmeal. It is … [read more...]

It’s Showtime!

Every year, when summer ends and the leaves begin to change color, us local Portlanders savor the last few sunny days before winter (and rain) truly arrives to the Pacific NW. When the chilly autumn nights arrive, one of my favorite indoor activities is getting out my collection of fall and winter themed movies. A good movie and a puzzle or crochet project is my favorite way to relax on cold winter nights. October is the perfect beginning to this weekly tradition of curling up on the couch and … [read more...]
