Italian Feast Gift Basket

This is a gift I have been wanting to put together for probably ten years. Now that I found the time and opportunity to do it, it was so amazingly easy! Most likely because I have spent so much time thinking about it, all the problems have been worked out. And also because I have the tomatoes all canned, the pesto all made and in the freezer, and the big plus - I harvested a nice big crop of oregano this year. You can make your Italian Feast Baskets as easy or as complicated as you want; you can … [read more...]

Homemade Vanilla Extract

Homemade vanilla extract is not only more delicious than most store bought extracts, but it's also really simple to make. I especially like the process because it gives me something to do with discarded vanilla bean pods once I've scraped the seeds for other recipes. The pods are so full of flavor and aroma that they shouldn't go to waste! To begin, find a bottle that has a tightly fitting lid or cork (I found mine at a thrift store), and clean/sterilize it. Once clean and dry, place your vanilla … [read more...]

Habanero Hot Sauce

With nearly a month to go before the big date, my fiancé and I are looking for fun favor ideas to send home with our guests after the wedding. And because we really like food, we've been looking for something fun and edible to make ourselves. Fortunately for us, our search for the perfect favor idea ended when I found a recipe for habanero hot sauce on Dax Phillip's food blog, Simple Comfort Food. Not only is it super spicy and delicious, but it's also the perfect shade of yellow to match our wedding … [read more...]

Homemade Barbecue Sauce

Now that it is summer, and barbecue season is officially underway, my fiancé and I find ourselves barbecuing dinner at least twice per week. As a result, I finally decided it was time to experiment with my own homemade barbecue sauce. I've always loved the taste of barbecue sauce as an addition beef and chicken, but I tend to find the sauce offerings at most grocery stores cloyingly sweet. So, in looking for the perfect recipe, I wanted something erring on the side of hot and spicy with, of course, … [read more...]

Homemade Catsup & Mustard

It's here! It's here! Summer is finally here! Us pacific northwesterners don't get very long summers, but when they come we take full advantage of them and that means grilling. I wanted to do something special for the first bar-b-cue of the year, so I made my own homemade ketchup and mustard! It was pretty simple and it made the hot dogs and hamburgers we had even more of an occasion! Here are the recipes for both…the ketchup takes a little longer to make, but boy oh boy is it worth it! Sweet … [read more...]

Tomato Sauce

There's something deeply satisfying about preserving the fresh vegetables and fruits that you have grown yourself in your back yard. If you have never canned before, tomatoes are a good place to start. They are very easy, and give great pleasure throughout the year as you use your wonderful sauce to prepare special dinners. Tomato Sauce Recipe • Fresh vine-ripened tomatoes • 1/2 tsp salt per pint (or 1 tsp per quart) • Weck or Kerr canning jars (can be found at most grocery stores) • … [read more...]

Homemade Crème Fraiche

Crème Fraiche is an ingredient in many recipes, yet it can be difficult to find in regular grocery stores. It has a nutty flavor, with a subtle tang that most resembles sour cream. Unlike sour cream, however, crème fraiche can be cooked without curdling. For this reason, it is often used in pan sauces, cream sauces, and soups. It can also be whipped with sweetener as an accompaniment to fruit, or made into fillings and frostings for cake. Crème fraiche may be difficult to find, but it is very … [read more...]

Sally’s Salsa

Every year I love to have a garden and experiment with growing different things. Last year I grew just a “salsa garden” with garlic, peppers, onions and of course tomatoes!  I ended up canning my own homemade salsa to give away as gifts. It felt so nice to be able to say I grew almost everything in my salsa myself (I did add cilantro, lemon pepper and vinegar from the store). I also made my own label for my canned salsa jars. My salsa garden conveniently was located at our My Own Labels office … [read more...]

Infused Olive Oil

Olive oil is truly God's gift to mankind. From skin care and hair products to being the absolute essential in fine cuisine, there is no better way to say you care than the gift of nature's nectar of extravagance. And infusing a good olive oil to the taste of your loved ones makes it even that much more special. Whether it's a lover of spice, or savory, or even sweet, infusing olive oil is a simple process that can be adapted for any discerning taste. I love a good caprese salad and I took it … [read more...]
