Waffle Knit Dishcloths

Over the summer, I decided to expand my crafty repertoire and explore the world of knitting. Although I've been handy with a crochet hook for years, my proficiency with knitting needles left much to be desired, which was a problem I very much wanted to remedy. So to teach myself how to knit properly, I decided to ease into it with a very small, simple pattern that required both knit and purl stitches: the Waffle Knit Dishcloth by Debbie Andriulli. To improve my skills, I knit one of these dishcloths … [read more...]

DIY Tea Bags

Last week, I saw an amazing tutorial over at A Beautiful Mess for DIY loose leaf teabags, and I knew had to try it for myself! Lucky for me, I just happened to have a box of loose black tea and some pumpkin pie spice lying around the house, so I thought this would be the perfect time of year to make gift boxes of homemade pumpkin spice tea to give to my friends and family for the holidays. This project ended up being super fun, and because I already had everything on hand, the whole thing was … [read more...]

Homemade Vanilla Extract

Homemade vanilla extract is not only more delicious than most store bought extracts, but it's also really simple to make. I especially like the process because it gives me something to do with discarded vanilla bean pods once I've scraped the seeds for other recipes. The pods are so full of flavor and aroma that they shouldn't go to waste! To begin, find a bottle that has a tightly fitting lid or cork (I found mine at a thrift store), and clean/sterilize it. Once clean and dry, place your vanilla … [read more...]

Sourdough Starter

If you are looking for a thoughtful gift to give a friend who is fond of baking, you may want to consider preparing a culture of sourdough. Sourdough, or wild yeast, has been used for thousands of years to leaven bread (long before packages of commercial yeast were readily available in supermarkets), and can take anywhere from one to three weeks to prepare. You can use a sourdough starter to make all sorts of breads. In fact, anything that can be leavened with commercial yeast will also have the … [read more...]

Homemade Crème Fraiche

Crème Fraiche is an ingredient in many recipes, yet it can be difficult to find in regular grocery stores. It has a nutty flavor, with a subtle tang that most resembles sour cream. Unlike sour cream, however, crème fraiche can be cooked without curdling. For this reason, it is often used in pan sauces, cream sauces, and soups. It can also be whipped with sweetener as an accompaniment to fruit, or made into fillings and frostings for cake. Crème fraiche may be difficult to find, but it is very … [read more...]

Labels for Mom

Over the past few weeks I've been trying to come up with gift ideas for Mother's Day. Thinking of a unique gift was easier as a child when I could make her some cool macaroni art or tissue paper flowers and she would love it! Now that I'm an adult, those simple kid crafts no longer apply. Instead of buying her real flowers or jewelry (typical mother's day gifts), I decided this year to give my mom a more functional gift, something I know she will use. My mom loves to cook. Every time I visit her … [read more...]

Heart Tarts

Heart-shaped baked goods aren't just for Valentine's Day. You can prepare them throughout the year to let your friends and family know that you love them. In fact, Mother's Day is right around the corner, and this recipe for heart-shaped handheld pastries is the perfect gift to express all of the gratitude you feel toward your mom this year. If you don't want to make the crust from scratch, you can purchase pre-made pie crusts from your grocery store (the kind that comes in a box), and cut the … [read more...]

May Day Basket

Every year I look forward to the month of May. May means that spring is in full bloom and the season of farmer's markets and outdoor art walks begin. Living in Portland, Oregon, I love seeing people out and about, enjoying the first days a sunny weather. You can find people out taking a stroll, working in their gardens or even enjoying a happy hour on a patio of their favorite local restaurant. After a long, cold winter, I am ready to celebrate warmer weather! One tradition that has been mostly … [read more...]

This is a great craft to do with kids because its so easy and fun to make. While I was standing in the kitchen, my fingers covered in peanut butter, I thought … [read more...]
