Shamrock Shakes

To celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day this year, my husband and I have decided to throw a dinner party for some close friends. Our menu consists of traditional Irish fare such as corned beef and cabbage, Guinness mustard, and Irish Soda bread. For dessert, however, we’ve decided to go the non-traditional route with homemade Shamrock Shakes. They’re green, minty, and super delicious – the perfect way to end the night. Enjoy! Homemade Shamrock Shakes Makes 2 to 3 servings. • 2 cups … [Read more...]

Making creative treats and gifts is one of my favorite activities and what better time to whip up something fun than to celebrate a holiday. Ever since I made my Valentine Candy Bottles, I've been obsessed with putting candy in jars. So for St. Patrick's Day this year, I made up these colorful Rainbow in a Jar gifts to hand out to my Irish friends. Rainbow in a Jar Supplies: • Rainbow colored candies (I chose Skittles. You will need one large bag for each jar you plan to make.) • … [Read more...]

Spicy Guinness Mustard

Every year for St. Patrick’s Day, my husband and I like to invite a few friends over for dinner where we serve corned beef and cabbage with a rustic loaf of Irish Soda Bread baked in a cast iron skillet. Along with these offerings, I like to make a batch of Guinness Mustard a few days in advance to serve with the corned beef. While it takes a day or two for the mustard seeds to absorb the liquid and soften, it only takes a few minutes to prepare the ingredients and grind the mixture into a … [Read more...]

Triple Cheese Beer Spread

cheese-spread-5

What a perfect spread for a St. Patrick’s Day party, because it’s excellent on crackers and goes perfectly with the beer. Actually, the beer is in it. I confess that I have to do some soul-searching before serving this spread, because it’s so hard to stop eating. If you want to enjoy it with a little less guilt, serve it for lunch on a whole-grain bread, along with a hearty soup like French Market Soup (recipe coming soon). Triple Cheese Beer Spread • 1/2 pound sharp cheddar … [Read more...]

Homemade Sauerkraut

Every year for St. Patrick's Day, my family serves traditional corned beef for dinner. I quickly found out, much to my dismay, that my husband doesn't like it. He will however eat the leftover corned beef in a Reuben sandwich, and what's a Reuben without sauerkraut? It may not be an Irish dish but it compliments Irish American dishes with its tangy crunch. So for St. Paddy's Day this year I'm gifting all my friends with a jar of homemade sauerkraut so they can start new Irish American traditions … [Read more...]

Irish Soda Bread

With St. Patrick’s Day on its way, I thought it would be fun to bake miniature loaves of Irish Soda bread to give as gifts. Traditional Irish Soda bread, made with just flour, baking soda, buttermilk and salt, is leavened by the reaction that occurs between the baking soda and buttermilk, and is served in Ireland as a regular accompaniment to meals. And while this particular soda bread recipe utilizes that very same chemical reaction, it includes a few more ingredients to make it extra special … [Read more...]

Clover Cookies

Decorating sugar cookies is something I enjoy for all sorts of holidays and events – not just Christmas. I especially love making a day out of it by inviting my friends over to help me, that way each cookie is frosted and sprinkled by a different person. This year for St. Patrick’s Day, I thought it would be super fun to try Martha Stewart’s recipe for Clover cookies, and give them away to friends in gift boxes. To create a clover stencil for your cookies, print out a clover template … [Read more...]

For Saint Patrick’s Day this year we’re having a green potluck. My roommate Beth is Irish and we try to do something special each year- just for fun! Knowing there will be an abundance of leprechaun and shamrock themed food, I wanted to shake things up by making a non-perishable gift that focuses on a different part of Irish culture- The Blarney Stone! There are several legends that are responsible for the mysticism surrounding the stone. One legend says that the Lord of Muscry in 14th or … [Read more...]

Black & White Cupcakes

Black and White cupcakes are the perfect treat to serve for St. Patrick’s Day this year. The cake is made with Guinness Draught, which lends an unexplainable richness and depth to the chocolate, and is balanced with a buttercream frosting infused with Irish cream. Combined, the two flavors make a delicious and balanced blend of the familiar Irish tastes we’ve come to know and love. To make Black & White Cupcakes, you’ll need: • 1 cup stout (such as Guinness) • 1 cup (2 sticks) … [Read more...]
