Simple Gifts: Valentine Kids

For a cute and inexpensive way to celebrate Valentine’s Day, order a couple sheets of photo labels for all your kids (and you too) to make treats for the special people in your lives. I love the idea of having your photo on sweet little goodies. All you have to do is put the label on and hand them out! Simple and quite sweet. You will be remembered. How to make your Valentine treats: The Carson Kids are on After Eights, little square mints covered in chocolate and slipped into a dark brown … [read more...]

Mountain Mommas

One of my favorite things about working at My Own Labels is seeing some of the great ideas our customers come up with. Recently, a coworker showed me a recent coaster order. They chose our Caption style featuring an amazing photo of a group of women wearing bright colored rain jackets in a Utah canyon. Both of us agreed it was a great photo and there had to be a great story behind it. So I contacted the customer, Kristin from Nashville, TN and was thrilled at her eagerness to share her story! We … [read more...]

Simple Gifts: Russian Tea Mix

Our son Nick, whom we adopted at age five, remembers this drink from when he was a little boy in Russia. He taught us how to prepare it, and now we enjoy it every Sunday morning at breakfast. You don't need to tell anyone how easy it is! You Will Need: • One box of Lipton instant ice tea mix flavored with sugar and lemon • Small glass jars from Specialtybottle.com or Kerr canning jars available at your local grocery store • Labels • Text labels (optional) • Tags (optional) • … [read more...]

Simple Gifts: Gift Coasters

One of the simplest of gifts to create, but the important ingredients of affection and thoughtful effort are present in the result. Choose a photo that you love, about the people you will be giving the coasters too... this could be a photo of them, or their house, their pets, their children or grandchildren. It could be a photo detail of a part of their lives - a beautiful plant in their yard, fruit on a tree, a fountain, a bird in their birdbath. Once you have chosen the photo, then choose a … [read more...]

Waffle Knit Dishcloths

Over the summer, I decided to expand my crafty repertoire and explore the world of knitting. Although I've been handy with a crochet hook for years, my proficiency with knitting needles left much to be desired, which was a problem I very much wanted to remedy. So to teach myself how to knit properly, I decided to ease into it with a very small, simple pattern that required both knit and purl stitches: the Waffle Knit Dishcloth by Debbie Andriulli. To improve my skills, I knit one of these dishcloths … [read more...]

Simple Gifts: Cinnamon Sachets

This is a sweet and easy gift to put together, especially if you have little hands to help. Cinnamon sachets hung in the kitchen are a beautiful way to store cinnamon for use in cooking, or just for looking at. Sachets are also good for freshening a closet or drawer, garnishing a stack of towels in the guest room, and - my favorite - as an ornament for the Christmas (or Easter) tree. You will need: • cinnamon sticks • ribbon or raffia • tags Be sure to allow for plenty of ribbon or … [read more...]

Sore Throat Remedy

With everyone I know getting sick over the last few weeks, I decided to prepare my favorite sore throat remedy to give as a 'get well' present for friends and family who are feeling under the weather. The recipe for this antiseptic throat-soothing concoction was originally posted over at Homelife, and really helps me whenever I'm sick. It's also simple to make, using just a few ingredient, and works best if gifted the same day it's jarred. Place in a pint sized wide mouth jar: • 2-4 slices … [read more...]

Quince Paste

It’s magical here in the middle of Portland, Oregon. I am amazingly fortunate to live in the city while at the same time have a beautiful backyard to escape to. Every year I look forward to the ripening of the two quince trees that grow in my backyard. I, like others who are fortunate to possess this fruit tree, admire its flowers, pray for healthy fruit and feel guilty if we don’t harvest every last aromatic quince. Only a few make it to full ripening without blemish. Those I use for brandied … [read more...]

Handmade Dish Scrubbies

If you read my posts here on planning a DIY wedding, you'll know that I was married in September (The wedding was perfect!). At first, I was worried about what I would do with all of my decorations once the big day was over, but now that I'm not spending all of my time planning a wedding, I'm using my free time to explore new and interesting ways to use up all of my leftover wedding materials. For instance, I recently ran across a free pattern for crocheted dish scrubbers made of tulle! The pattern … [read more...]

Simple Gifts: Stuffed Olives

Super simple. The hardest part of this is gathering the components - the jars, the olives, the cheeses, the herbs, the labels - but once they are all at hand, making a dozen jars of stuffed olives will take an hour or two, and when done, you are all prepared with hostess gifts for the season! Ingredients and Materials: Olives - choose large pitted olives; buy enough to fill the number of jars you have. Herbs - your choice. Experiment with different combinations of the following, or just … [read more...]
