Inside Chana’s Art Room

art-room-1

My favorite little place in the world: My desk with my imagination. I waited for many years for this table and for my 15 year anniversary I received this desk as a gift from my husband. It's not just a craft table… it's space. Space to dream, to imagine, to create, to ponder, to wonder, to embrace my inner thoughts and watch them come alive. I love that this table has height. Not just because I'm short and enjoy the added inches without heels but because it seems closer to that special … [Read more...]

Country Potholders

pot-holders-3

(Used in this project: Circle Labels in Mele Kalikimaka style.) Last summer we went to the Cowboy Dinner Tree. It is pretty famous among a subgroup of Oregonians who value odd experiences in the country and like to eat a lot. It’s outside of the town of Silver Lake, Oregon, about two hours south and west of the dead center of Oregon. We wanted to eat there; we had heard about it for years and years, and never came close enough to stop, but on this trip, we knew well enough ahead of time to … [Read more...]

Coffee Kitchen Soap

coffee-soap-4

We are all aware of those wonderfully delicious foods that leave a less than desirable scent on our hands after preparation. Red onions, tuna, scallions, tilapia, chives, all are staples in my kitchen—Oy vey! Knowing I am not the only cook that loves unfortunately sulfuric foods, this odor-neutralizing kitchen soap is a fantastic gift for my like-minded friends and family. The recipe on Heart~Hands~Home blog started my interest, however I went the easier route to avoid using Lye and a … [Read more...]

Identification Labels

Don't lose your belongings!

id-labels-gallery

I had a housemate once who lost her phone on a long distance bus trip. The main bus depot was in Chicago, and we lived in Champagne-Urbana, about two hours away, so she called them to retrieve it. But her phone's battery had died and the phone body was so nondescript that she couldn't prove to the employees in charge of lost and found that they, indeed, had her phone. Inspired by this misadventure, I immediately slapped an address label on my phone. It was just my name and street address, enough … [Read more...]

Personalized Savings Jar

savings-jar-3

I'm starting off this year by getting serious about saving more money for traveling so I made a savings jar to motivate myself everyday to reach my goal. I know I'm not the only one planning to save up for a little (or big) something so to inspire and motivate my friends and family to save for the things they want I'm giving each of them a personalized savings jar to give them a little push in the right direction. Supplies: • Mason jars • Personalized labels and tags • Dollar bills … [Read more...]

Pinecone Fire Starter Favors

firestarters-3

Pinecone fire starters are a fun and useful craft I remember making in Girl Scouts. We melted beeswax in tin cans over the campfire and had fun dipping our pine cones in and then setting them out to dry. We then used them to help start our fires for campfire cooking. Having recently revisited this craft, I realized these fire starters could be a useful and beautiful gift to give. The process is simple enough and would make the perfect favor for a fall or winter wedding. Surprise your guests with … [Read more...]

No-See-Ums Shield Bug Spray

bug-spray-400a

In Florida, the two most prevalent afflictions are sunburns and bug bites. One, you acquire through being outside in the sun too much, and the other is acquired at any time you try to avoid the sun. The mosquitoes are merciless at dawn and dusk. They are bred and born in the numerous, man-made, drainage lakes that prevent southern and central Florida from turning altogether into swampland. Aside from the mosquitoes, biting flies, and fire ants, there are ‘No-See-Ums.’ When I first heard a … [Read more...]

Lavender Sachet

lavendar-sachet-400aa

I’ve always believed that the scent of a space sets the tone of the environment you are walking into. My favorite tone is set by the scent of fresh flowers, or some hint of earthy spices. I’ve been known to take plant leaves and rub them on my wrists as I walk through a garden- Rosemary, lemon balm, mint- there are so many! One of my favorites, since trying desperately to grow my own in Florida, is lavender (bountifully grown in temperate climates). I thought that as the weather warms up, … [Read more...]

Waffle Knit Dishcloths

knit-washcloth-2-400

Over the summer, I decided to expand my crafty repertoire and explore the world of knitting. Although I've been handy with a crochet hook for years, my proficiency with knitting needles left much to be desired, which was a problem I very much wanted to remedy. So to teach myself how to knit properly, I decided to ease into it with a very small, simple pattern that required both knit and purl stitches: the Waffle Knit Dishcloth by Debbie Andriulli. To improve my skills, I knit one of these … [Read more...]
