Simple Gifts: Packaged Chocolates

It seems like this favor created itself. I had no idea what I wanted it to be, but I found an adorable product while browsing a canned food outlet - these little boxes of chocolate squares - which were very inexpensive and cute, and there were dozens of them... and the very best part is, I discovered that My Own Labels label shape 04 fit them just perfectly! This is how it came about: when I found the little boxes of chocolates I saw they would be a good candidate for favors if I could find a … [read more...]

Homemade Coffee & Berry Liqueurs

Spring is a great time to start crafting a homemade liqueur. The bottles can age for a few months and be ready for a summer wedding, or for a few months longer and be perfect to hand out during the holidays. The recipes we've included are surprisingly simple and provide a good excuse to spend an afternoon in the kitchen... and several evenings doing taste tests! Served in (or given with) tiny glasses and paired with chocolate, these liqueurs become special gifts for loved ones, or festive thank-yous … [read more...]

Jasmine Green Tea Soap

Walking into my grandmother’s bathroom was akin to visiting a shrine to femininity. All the surfaces were decorated to suit her sense of beauty and womanhood; lavish flowers, sensual perfume bottles, fragrant soaps, and distinctly female-inspired art on the walls. However, it was never too much, always just enough. Every visit, I thought, this is what its like to be a woman, this is what she keeps for herself; aside from raising children, supporting her life-partner, and keeping the home. My mother … [read more...]

Simple Gifts: Gift Coasters

One of the simplest of gifts to create, but the important ingredients of affection and thoughtful effort are present in the result. Choose a photo that you love, about the people you will be giving the coasters too... this could be a photo of them, or their house, their pets, their children or grandchildren. It could be a photo detail of a part of their lives - a beautiful plant in their yard, fruit on a tree, a fountain, a bird in their birdbath. Once you have chosen the photo, then choose a … [read more...]

Gooey Butter Cups

Gooey Butter cake, to me, is a taste of home. When I was a kid I remember being allowed to choose which cake we would buy from the market. I always tried to choose the one with the most powdered sugar on top. I grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, where it originated. There is a story told about this cake being a complete accident. In the 1930's, a young baker was asked to prepare a few deep butter cakes, but used the wrong butter smear. Instead of the deep butter smear he used the gooey butter smear … [read more...]

DIY Tea Bags

Last week, I saw an amazing tutorial over at A Beautiful Mess for DIY loose leaf teabags, and I knew had to try it for myself! Lucky for me, I just happened to have a box of loose black tea and some pumpkin pie spice lying around the house, so I thought this would be the perfect time of year to make gift boxes of homemade pumpkin spice tea to give to my friends and family for the holidays. This project ended up being super fun, and because I already had everything on hand, the whole thing was … [read more...]

Acorn Cakelets

Welcome our newest guest blogger, Barbara Hayes! Barbara works as a bookkeeper in Portland, Oregon. When she's not calculating tax returns, she can usually be found tending to her garden, scouring antique stores for vintage treasures, and of course, cooking something amazing! I love acorns. I collect all things “acorn.” I pick them up off the ground as I walk through our neighborhood, bring home wooden carvings, cookie cutters, and candles all in shapes of acorns. I also love cooking … [read more...]

Simple Gifts: Stuffed Olives

Super simple. The hardest part of this is gathering the components - the jars, the olives, the cheeses, the herbs, the labels - but once they are all at hand, making a dozen jars of stuffed olives will take an hour or two, and when done, you are all prepared with hostess gifts for the season! Ingredients and Materials: Olives - choose large pitted olives; buy enough to fill the number of jars you have. Herbs - your choice. Experiment with different combinations of the following, or just … [read more...]

Simple Gifts: Dried Fruits & Nuts

A beautifully simple, yet lavishly appealing, box of goodies. When I finished the photo shoot at the office, I put the boxes on the tables in the staff room. Oh, the oohs and ahhs! It was just a collection of dried fruits and nuts, but there is somehow an appeal that speaks clearly. As people admired the boxed goodies and reached for a dried apricot or macadamia nut, I heard “...and they are so healthy, too!” “...ooh, these are so good for you!” There is nothing to it, really. Just put … [read more...]
