Homemade Tea Favors

Homemade tea blends are easy to make and package perfectly as favors for wedding or shower guests. The hardest part is deciding what kind of tea you want to make. Once it is all made up, you will find you have lots and lots of it, because a little bit of dried leaves go a long, long way. Make loose-leaf tea by picking your own homegrown leaves or buying tea in bulk, and blend the leaves as you like, adding herbs and spices. My first tea was mint tea, because I love it and because I have a large … [read more...]

Wedding Mints

Mints have been a classic wedding favor since the nineteenth century, when they were given in the form of peppermint candies as a luxurious sweet in the days when white sugar was rare and costly. Today, mints are still the sweet of choice for American brides, and you can add a personal touch by making them yourself and adding a personalized label. Ingredients: • 12 oz. cream cheese • 3 lbs. powdered sugar • 6 drops peppermint flavoring, or as desired • food coloring Put all ingredients … [read more...]

Jasmine Green Tea Soap

Walking into my grandmother’s bathroom was akin to visiting a shrine to femininity. All the surfaces were decorated to suit her sense of beauty and womanhood; lavish flowers, sensual perfume bottles, fragrant soaps, and distinctly female-inspired art on the walls. However, it was never too much, always just enough. Every visit, I thought, this is what its like to be a woman, this is what she keeps for herself; aside from raising children, supporting her life-partner, and keeping the home. My mother … [read more...]

Bride Ale

Did you know that back in the day- way, way back in the day- before their wedding, brides would brew a special batch of beer to sell? This was to raise funds for her and her husband's new life together. We still have traditions like these, money dances at wedding receptions and money trees on which wedding guests can clip paper money for the couples use. But there is no need for this bridal beer to fade into the past. I am not much of a beer brewer but I thought it would be neat to apply this … [read more...]

Furoshiki Wraps

Furoshiki is the Japanese art of using cloth to carry objects. It has been used for hundreds of years to carry lunches, vegetables, books, market purchases, gifts, small pets, and anything that needs to be carried from here to there. The basic furoshiki is a large piece of cloth that has been folded and knotted into a bag - see this video. Another use is for the wrapping of gifts. We have made simple little favors of breath mints, wrapped in silk scraps from a worn and torn child's robe. The robe … [read more...]
