DIY Christmas Wreaths

For Christmas this year, I thought it would be fun to surprise my family by hanging homemade wreaths on their front doorknobs. After a quick search on DIY Christmas wreaths, I found a tutorial for the most amazing toilet paper roll version over at See You There Design, and started collecting toilet paper and paper towel rolls for the project. After a month or two of collecting rolls (and acquiring donations from generous friends) I had enough to start my project.

Once they were finished, I was surprised with how beautiful and rustic they were. You could use these toilet paper roll wreaths for weddings and parties as well, and most people would probably never guess their origin.

To make your own toilet paper roll wreaths to give as gifts, you’ll need:

-Toilet paper or paper towel rolls.
-Ruler
-Pencil
-Scissors
-Hot glue gun
-Decorations, such as tissue flowers, ribbon, or paper banners
-A small hole puncher
-Personalized tags from My Own Labels

Push down on your toilet paper or paper towel rolls to flatten. Take a ruler and a pencil, and mark lines across your rolls every 1 1/2 inches. Once your lines are marked, use scissors to cut where the marks are.

Once all of your rolls are cut into leaves, you can begin constructing the inner ring of your first wreath. You can make your wreaths as large or small as you like. My wreaths are small, so I didn’t need to use a guide. If you’d like to make larger rings, however, you may want to use a circular object, such as a plate or an embroidery hoop, to help you line up your first layer of leaves

Turn on your hot glue gun, and arrange your leaves in a circle. Once you like how they’re arranged, glue the leaves together, one by one. Make sure you use plenty of glue so that the wreath is nice and sturdy.

Once the first layer is dry, arrange your second layer of leaves. Make sure you like how they’re arranged, and start gluing just like you did your first layer. Continue adding layers until you’re happy with the size of your wreaths. Since mine are small, I only did about 3 layers per wreath, but you may want to add more if you’re making a large wreath for yourself. Allow all of the layers of your wreath to dry completely, and then decorate!

For my wreaths, I decorated with tiny tissue paper flowers and paper banners with the words “peace” and “joy”, and attached them with hot glue. I also added personalized tags by punching a small hole in the bottom of my wreaths and attaching them with a strand of twine. I added a few beads for weight, and knotted the ends of my twine once it was through the small hole in the wreath to keep it in place. The tags I used for this project are deep red in the style Love, with a personal message to our family so they know we’re thinking of them this Christmas.
