Nothing beats curling up in your favorite chair with a mug of hot chocolate and a good book on these cold winter days. Surprisingly, nothing beats homemade hot chocolate mix. It is very easy to make up and you can tweak the flavor of the drink so that it is just as you like it. When paired with marshmallows, this mix makes a wonderful holiday gift.
I chose a jar that could be used again and again after the chocolate mix was gone. I found them at Sur La Table (about $3 for a .2 liter jar). Creating the mix is simplicity in itself. Just mix together the following ingredients-
• 1/2 cup cocoa
• 1 cup sugar
• 1 tsp cinnamon
• dash salt
My cocoa and cinnamon came from Penzeys. They have a wide selection of spices and the quality is never disappointing.
The beautiful thing about making your own mix (and with a recipe this simple) it is easy to adjust amounts so that they taste just the way that you want it to. Other spices you could try if you wanted include: cloves, nutmeg, vanilla, even chile pepper if you like things spicy. To prepare the drink simply scoop a couple spoonfuls of your mix into a mug of warmed milk. For the richest and best tasting hot chocolate I suggest using whole or two percent milk. Then sprinkle liberally with marshmallows, and enjoy!
To package the drink mix I chose Magyar style labels and tags. This is a fun and rewarding project- I hope that you have fun with it!
