Bride Ale

Did you know that back in the day- way, way back in the day- before their wedding, brides would brew a special batch of beer to sell? This was to raise funds for her and her husband's new life together. We still have traditions like these, money dances at wedding receptions and money trees on which wedding guests can clip paper money for the couples use. But there is no need for this bridal beer to fade into the past. I am not much of a beer brewer but I thought it would be neat to apply this … [read more...]

Melon IPA

There are traditions of making fruit beers all over the world. Raspberries, cherries, peaches, pumpkins, grapes, blueberries, juniper berries- just about any fruit you can think of has made it’s way into a wirt kettle at some point. However, I have never seen a cantaloupe beer. I love the sweet musky flavor of cantaloupe and was very curious to see how that would translate. I chose to make an IPA because my hops had come ripe just as the cantaloupes were getting good, fat, and sweet. What … [read more...]

Father’s Day Beer and Crochet Cozy Pattern!

With Father's Day right around the corner, I want to give my dad a gift I know he'll love - his favorite beer. And while I know the beer will be well appreciated on its own, I want to make my gift to him extra special, so I've decided to dress his favorite brand of brew with personalized beer labels. To top it off, I've made my father a couple simple crocheted beer cozies to accompany the rest of his gift. I wasn't able to find a pattern for this project on the internet, so I created my own. This … [read more...]

Guinness Beer Bread

Well faith and begorrah it's almost St. Patrick's day! That means one thing for me and my buddies - Guiness. And who knew there were so many ways to enjoy this great Irish tradition. I came across this recipe here and it looked so delicious I had to try it. Let me tell you, they say soda bread is Irish, but nothing is more Irish and more delicious to me than Guiness beer bread. Ingredients: • 3 cups self-rising flour* • 1/2 cup white sugar • 1/3 cup molasses • A pinch of salt (roughly … [read more...]

Homemade Irish Cream

There are two reasons March is my absolute favorite month. One, my birthday is March 12. Two, St. Patrick's Day is March 17 and that means I have an excuse to indulge in delicious drinks like Guinness and more importantly, Irish Cream. Irish Cream is one of my favorite liquors ever. It's great in coffee, great in white russians, great on ice and until now March was the only time I drank it. But this birthday I made a little present for myself, homemade Irish Cream! And it's better than any store … [read more...]

Ball & Chain Brew

After 15 years of marriage you have to have a sense of humor like Tami and her husband. As an anniversary gift, Tami and a few friends came up with the idea to give her husband a homemade "Ball and Chain Brew". A beer complete with a label of their wedding photo and even a few inside jokes. And to remember how far they have come in their 15 years of being blissfully shackled together they even turned their label into a magnet that they keep on their fridge! Whether it's friends, family, co-workers … [read more...]

Homemade Honey-Wine

When you think of mead, what comes to mind? My first thought is a townhall filled with Vikings singing in drunken revelry, swigging some unrefined swill from steel goblets. But that picture couldn't be farther from the truth. Mead, or honey-wine, has been around since ancient greece. It was the drink of poets, scholars and royalty and it is as refined as any other vintage. Brewing mead sounds intimidating, but trust me, it's a simple process and though there is tons of equipment you can buy to make … [read more...]
