Valentine Rum Truffles

February has a far more relaxing vibe than the preceding two months. The most notable holiday is Valentine’s Day; a holiday you can choose to celebrate on a large scale by sending out a plethora of notes, or more laid back and intimately spent with your sweetheart. I insist on doing both. My favorite way to continue the creative momentum and warmth of the holidays, usually climaxing on New Year’s Eve, is to give my loved ones little treasures on Valentine’s Day. To make it extra special and … [read more...]

Valentine Candy Flowers

My son is in first grade and his classroom is going to be having a Valentine's Day party soon. It's a traditional affair where the kids will hand out valentines to all of their fellow students and eat some sweet treats, probably do some arts and crafts too. He's really excited to show all of his friends how much he loves them, and I thought it would be fun to make something, instead of buying the paper print outs you'd find at the store. We came up with an idea to turn heart shaped suckers into flowers. … [read more...]

For a cute and inexpensive way to celebrate Valentine’s Day, order a couple sheets of photo labels for all your kids (and you too) to make treats for the special people in your lives. I love the idea of having your photo on sweet little goodies. All you have to do is put the label on and hand them out! Simple and quite sweet. You will be remembered. How to make your Valentine treats: The Carson Kids are on After Eights, little square mints covered in chocolate and slipped into a dark brown … [read more...]

Cream Cheese Mints

I make these every year for my holiday cookie trays. They are easy and fun to make. You don’t need to make very many. Just a few mints look great on a tray or by themselves. Trade them at a cookie parties or give them as gifts. Recipe: • 8 oz. pkg. cream cheese • ¼ c. soft butter • 2 boxes powdered sugar 2 lb. (plus 1 box on hand for rolling) • Food coloring (Try the gels if you haven’t yet. You can control color intensity better than with liquids.) • Various extract flavors … [read more...]

Rummed Fruit

Rummed fruit is the base ingredient in Christmas cake which is a rich pudding-like cake made in the Caribbean. I loved the infused fruit so much that I thought, why not skip the cake and go straight for the gold! They taste great on top of brie cheese, hot apple pie, or mixed with spiced cider, but I like them best as a finger food. What You'll Need: • Glass canning jars and lids • Dried fruit (golden raisins, cranberries, apricots, cherries, anything will taste great, you could even throw … [read more...]

DIY Candy Filled Pumpkin Favors

These candy-filled pumpkins are so cute and fun to make. I originally got the idea from Martha Stewart's Cherry Bomb Wedding Favor How-To. But instead of a cherry, I decided to make pumpkins for Halloween favors. I even added my own favor tags to make them more special and unique! Martha's how-to says these are "a cinch to make" but it took a little practice for me to get the hang of it. After making 4 duds, I came up with these beauties! Tools & Supplies: • Orange tissue paper • Scissors • … [read more...]

Candy Corn Party Mix

I am very excited about planning a kids Halloween party this year with my friends. We have lots of fun games and treats planned. I'm bringing my candy corn party mix. This is not your ordinary Chex mix either, it's full of little candy corn candies, and coated in white chocolate. I just know they will get eaten up quickly. And it makes me feel better knowing that the little ones will be getting a serving of whole grains and not even know it! Ingredients: • 4 cups Chex Mix cereal • 2 cups … [read more...]

Homemade Fruit Leather

Recently, I made an impulse purchase on a flat of strawberries at the farmer's market. The only problem? After I brought the berries home, I realized that I wasn't in the mood for making jam or pie. Lucky for me, I remembered running across a recipe for homemade fruit leather over on Simply Recipes just the other day, so I seized the opportunity to try it myself. The procedure is very simple, and written in such a way that you can utilize any fruit that's available to you. In fact, I plan on making … [read more...]
